World Wide Consortium Essay -- Expository Internet Essays

populace Wide Consortium Tim Bernes-Lee in 1989 created the World Wide Web, and in 1994 he and a few others established the World Wide Consortium. (a) The World Wide Consortiums mission is to lead the world wide web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that hear long-term growth for the web (a). This is an international organization with a variety of members making up the organization. They all have a common goal which is to exact the web standardized with rules and principles, and to date they have made over eighty recommendations.(a)The World Wide Consortium has had three long-standing goals. These are to provide universal access, a semantic web, and a web of trust. Universal access means to make the Web ready to hand(predicate) to all by promoting technologies that take into account the vast differences in culture, languages, education, ability, material resources, access devices, and physical limitations of users on all continents (a). Semant ic Web means to build a software setting that allows everyone to utilize the assets that are accessible on the World Wide Web. Web of trust means to guide the Webs development with careful consideration for the novel legal, commercial, and social issues raised by this technology (a). In this paper I am limiting my discussion to universal access and the issues surrounding it. To help promote the three goals the consortium has also developed three design principles for the web. These principles are interoperability, evolution, and decentralization. For the web to have interoperability, a user needs to be suitable to use any ironware or software they want and still be able to access whats on the web. When someone adds something to the web they need t... ...ortium and I knew nothing close the World Wide Consortium. It is good to know that there is a dedicated group setting guidelines and recommendation to achieve universal access to the web, making true the web software is c ompatible o all users and is making the web a trusted way of doing business. I believe that this organization is helping the net profit to continually grow successfully, and without this organization the internet probably would not be near as useful as it can be. People would probably scarce do what ever they felt like doing. I now realize how important it is to really think about a lot of issues when designing a website to make it universal accessible. Building a website is now not simply designing one, but also thinking about how everyone will be able to have access no matter what language they speak, how old they are, or if they have a disabled.

In addition, he has produced some of the most magnificent ornaments seen in 19th and 20th century, which adorned his buildings. On September 3, 1856, Louis Henri Sullivan was born in Boston, momma. His came from an Irish father and a French mother. Louis led a sheltered childhood as result of the civil war, and spent a good deal of time on his grandparents farm outside of the city. Teenage Suicide :: Teenage Suicide Essays

Teenage SuicideThe killing of own life intention whollyy is referred as suicide. Over thepast years, American society has been fearfulnessed about this issue, especiallyteenage suicide. The suicide rate among teenagers is not constant for a periodof clip it keeps changing over time. Most of the time, the suicide rate amongboys is greater than that among girls.Different types of people in our society respond to this issue indifferent ways. forward in this year, some 932 p bents of adolescents completeda questionnaire of 30 common psychological medical concerns of adolescence, among which suicide was one item. They were asked how important it is forpediatricians to discuss these with their kids during checkups. The resultshowed that more than 66% of the parents being questioned said 29 of the 30items were important to be discussed with their teenage children. This surveyshowed that American parents are somehow concerned about suicide among teenagers. This concern is pervasive among A merican teenagers. The survey reulted that 60% of the teenagers reported knowing some otherteen who had attempted suicide while 6% reported having make an attemptthemselves. The above two examples indicates that it is very important for parents, counselors, or different institutions to puzzle aware of the reasons andsymptons of teenage suicide and to find out possible preventive procedures.Recently, an examination of suicide pass judgment among Black and White adolescents from1986 to 1991 was made. Those increases were more rapid in areas where suicide rateswere historically low. This phenomenon tells that there are various kinds ofreasons for suicide and different ty pes of methods for suicide are also beingused.During the late 1970s and early 1980s in Oxford, the rate of deliberateself-poisoning and self-injury in older female teenagers declined, but itincreased again between 1986 and 1989. For male adolescents, self-poisoningwith minor tanquillizers and sedatives had declined, but paracetamol self-poisoning increased in that period. In Zimbabwe, young women during 1970s usedpoison as the method of suicide however, self-immolation was frequently beingused in the mid 1980s.There are various types of reasons why teenagers commit suicide. Suicidein teenagers is sometimes linked to, or in relation with, vision therapy. Itwas argued that an inadequate level of concentration or short attention span ofa patient is a common cause for the academic, personality, and behavioral

The New Electronic World Essay -- Internet Technology Technological Pa

The New Electronic WorldCyberspace has become a reality of everyday life. great deal across the area spend significant amounts of time and effort in the construction, maintenance, and innovation of the net profit. Becoming Literate

From Spanish to English Becoming Literate Mark Twain once said, The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read. It was in first grade when I first learned how to read. Mrs. Garza was my teacher and I will never forget her because she is the cardinal that taught me how to read, write, and speak English. If it was not for her encouragement and push she gave me I would not fuddle been where I am today. It was a defy that contained a collection of short stories. linguistic communication give care mat and hat were in this book. After that year my mom was so happy and proud of me that she bought that book from the school. To this day I still have that book and I look at it from time to time. I was born and raised in McAllen, Texas simply the weird thing is that I am the only soul in my whole family that was born in the United States My parents are from Monterrey in Mexico so of course they speak only Spanish with a little turn of English. My first language was Spanish and I did not start speaking English until the end of first grade.I had already learned my English alphabet in kinder only when I never wanted to speak or use English for some reason. Mrs. Garza would have to force us to speak English besides my friends and I never wanted to One day, after trying so many methods, she put little jars in each of the groups in the class. She told us that for every person that she would hear speak Spanish, she was going to place a marble in the jar. At the end of the week whoever had the least marbles would get rewarded with both a candy or and item of some sort. That is how I was forced to speak and write English. It was then that I started talking to my friends in English as well. At home, I was still speaking Spanish with my parents and siblings. I already knew my alphabet so I began to read, write and speak English. To this day, I thank my parents for instruct me Spanish first because it has been very useful. I have never really like d writing. I am in a way kind of like Junot Diaz, Ill be writing and I will not think it is good at all and will just doubt myself. Being a undefeated writer does take a lot of thinking, years of hard work and dedication, and of course the passion you have for writing. The words just do not stick with to me as easy as other people and that frustrates me. I have to really think about it and re-read and re-write it many times before I have a finished product. When it comes to people like Malcom X, he did of course have all of this dedication to learn new words. He did not grow up with all the resources that maybe Junot Diaz and Stephen King did so that pushed him even more to teach himself. These three writers help you realize that these famous authors also have struggled to have a finished product. They helped me realize that doubting yourself and trashing the first, second, and even a third draft always come before you have it almost perfect. Reading is to the mind what good exampl e is to the body, said Richard Steele. This has always been one of my favorite quotes because unlike writing, I have a passion to read. I have always loved to read specially a series. The first series that I ever read was the Junie B. Jones during my elementary years. I would check one out in my school library, return it by the end of the week and quickly get the next one.To this day, I still consider myself to be an active reader and ever since I got an Amazon Kindle, I read much faster. It is easier for me to take it to anywhere and anytime. I enjoy mostly fiction books but do read other genres from time-to-time. I have memories of universe so excited to add new books to the list whenever I completed them. I always challenge myself to read as many books as I can in a week because of the rush I get after finishing another book. I still read every genius day and often cannot put down a book once I start it.My older sister loves to read as well. We have the said(prenominal) taste in books and I love it because whenever she reads a book she will tell me to read it because she knows I will enjoy it as much as she did. Since she also has a Kindle, we can share the eBooks electronically so I will not actually have to buy a book. She is also in a book club, which sounds nerdy, but she has a lot of caper. They read a different novel every single week and then they meet on Fridays. She loves macrocosm in this club because it gives her a chance to talk about the novel to her friends.I know I am not the only person to enunciate this, but I hate it whenever I read a novel and I immediately want to talk to someone and share my thoughts about it but no one that has read it My sister has convinced me to join a book club sometime because it is a great way to have fun and enjoy reading even more. Although I love to read, whenever I am assigned a novel it is so hard for me to read it Last year in my AP English class, my teacher Ms. Grace would assign us a reading list wi th novels we had to read by specific dates. Some were good but some I was just not interested in so it was very hard to pick up the book and start reading. For some reason, whenever I am assigned a novel to read and finish it by a specific date, I cannot get myself to read it. Whenever I choose a novel that I want to read I will finish it the very next day, which I find very ironic. I am grateful that I had the resources to become literate. Life would not be the same if you do not have that skill. I cannot even begin to imagine not being able to read or write. I am glad that I had such a wonderful teacher for first grade because without her encouragement I would not be here today reading, writing, or speaking English.

Fight Club and the Idea of Nonsensical Life Essay

In our dynamic and busy society, every one is prone to suffer some psychological problems from its faintest symptoms to the most severe result to the human mind. This trouble occurs because our society can not satisfy our mental capabilities. This shows that even if the human mind is regarded as the most all important(predicate) and most reliable machine in the universe, there is still the possibility that it cannot handle every inch of information fed into it, which unfortunately draws back with electronegative military groups in our social and psychological nature. The psychological problems are somewhat manifested in the actions of concourse in our everyday activities which includes social interaction, eating, walking, sleeping, and others. The body, together with our mind is our last-ditch weapon to all problems that attacks us in every minute of every day, thus it is important to take care of our body and mind to ensure a smooth flow of social and psychological functions One of the most common problems that muckle around the innovation experience that has something to do with the psychological nature and has an effect in the social realm is the presence of insomnia. This is a physiological and psychological problem that holds a soulfulness stay awake for hours in the night and could flatus to depression, concern, and other psychological and social problems if not organism taken cared of. This could be seen in situations of stress and other social factors such as boredom and firmly depressing situations that makes the mind of an individual relatively awake at night, and affects m apiece aspects of its life including his/her career, social life and interaction, leisure, and even the family. This is illustrated in Chuck Palahniuks smart Fight Club.Wherein, the main character or the narrator suffers from insomnia and eventually led him to other directions of life that changed the course of his substantial nature and realm forever. I command to a good nights sleep. I want to get up with go forth feeling that to waken is to plunge through a sand trap door(40). This poem line shows us that many people experience problems of insomnia, which have a different effect on every body establish on the interpretation and diagnosis from the persons history and psychological disposition. So why do people suffer from insomnia and psychological problem? One of the main reasons, I think is that, most people who go through is have a feeling that their lives were senseless or vain. This overly makes it easier to understand that people who suffer any psychological problem have the tendency to overreact and unfortunately lead themselves to death. Their idea of a good life is being overrun by anxiety and senseless assumptions that makes them think that their actions arte not enough to act ordinarily and make themselves think as if they are the ones responsible for failures and misrecognitions. Chuck wrote about these feelings in his check throu gh the use of a character named Tyler.Tyler shows the people his influence through his illustration of nonsensical lives the people had been which gave him the reason to create the group and the fight nine members a new reason to live their lives as they prefer it. The first life that Tyler changed was essentially his own. The main character and Tyler are actually the same person although the narrator did not learn this until near the end of the story. When Tyler and the narrator first met together, they started fight club after Tylers uttered his legendary phrase, I want you to hit me as hard as you can (Palahniuk 46).This started a totally different period in the narrators life. Different from the meaningless plainly contented life he had been experiencing. This led to an unstructured yet significant life moment he felt in everyday of his life. It is far from his unhappy, flavorless and tedious life at the office, selling cars and dealing with his hated boss. The narrator, havi ng had his life changed by Tyler and fight club, then goes on to say, You arent alive anywhere analogous your alive at fight club (51). The narrator would rather be at fight club than anywhere else in the world.Along with this, he also says that After a night in fight club, everything in the real world gets the volume turned down (49). The main character cannot compare his experiences at fight club to anything else in his life. His enthusiasm and eager ness is shown in fight club more than anything in the he ever done in the world, and in the course of his life. Tyler Durden tore down the narrator by changing his life and then rebuilt his life by starting fight club with him. For the narrator, his unforeseen meeting with Tyler is the most phenomenal yet unbelievable thing that he never thought could change his nonsensical life.Tyler also changed strangers lives by establishing Project havoc and giving assignments at fight club, to be executed and that would make a change in the so cial environment as the day goes on. Tyler ordered the members to each make twelve human sacrifices to ensure their existence in the organization and make their commitment as sincere as possible thru these assignments. The best shell is the human sacrifice the narrator made of Raymond Hessel. The narrator takes Raymond at gunpoint and makes him explain that he has failed at becoming a veterinarian. After telling Raymond that he will kill him if he wont be on his way to becoming a veterinarian in three months, the narrator lets him go and remarks, Raymond K. K. Hessel, your dinner is going to taste better than any meal youve ever eaten, and tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of your life (155). By doing this, the narrator has made Raymond stop taking his life for granted and made him do something productive with his life. Although most people would see this act as being mean or cruel, this is the best and most effective way for the narrator to get Raymond to stop taking his life for granted. In other actors line, there is a great effect given off by the group not merely upon themselves but to other people as well. It did not matter if these people are total strangers, but what is important to them is the huge effect they make in the lives of people, including that of Tylers and the narrators. By following the rules and compensating the value of their commitment, the members practically make their lives as meaningful to them, especially inside of the fight club circle. Tyler then expands his vision and decides to create Project Mayhem to try to change the world. With all the effect of fight club in the minds of its members and the effect of their actions in the society, they became a large organization that plans to take over the society by way of Tyler Durdens words and commands. In other words, his words are interchangeable Gods commandments that should be followed in order to make some changes in the scenes of problematic world locations. He says Like f ight club does with clerks and box boys, Project Mayhem will break up civilization so that we can make something better out of the world (125).He sees that the only way to change the world is to destroy it so it can rebuild into something stronger. Tyler thought of the world as my world, my world, and those ancient people are dead (124). He wanted the world to be his generations world and for it to be free of history. Tyler saw that history had done harm to the world, so if they freed the world from its history they were going to save the world (125). Project Mayhems main focus is to take the world one step back so they can propel three steps forward. It is like an anarchistic thought that, people should not believe in what ever authorities say, what is important is what Tyler says and the members should believe and respect it like no other authorities exist. By putting into every ones mind that fight club should not be talked about impertinent of their organizational circle, the group remains as underground as possible to protect their identity and to protect their principle to change the mainstream interpretation of the world. With this, it shows that it reflects the world view of the narrator as a tedious and tiring scenario wherein he should obey every word his boss says.Or he should do every give given to him everyday. Sometimes we are tricked into thinking that the only ways for change to come about is to keep moving forward and in the same direction. In Fight Club, we are shown that this is not true by the character of Tyler and that sometimes it is better to move backwards so we can progress forwards. Not only is this true in the book, but it can also be applied to situations in the real world. In addition, we may take another path to describe progress and growth other than what is given to us by the world.Peoples view on the world and life as a whole should be taken on its next level that we should not only think in its linear sense but in a fan out one. More possibilities and more options. This was also internalized by the narrator through the revelation of Tyler Durdens identity throughout the story, which gave him other idea of life not comely the ordinary life he experienced in the past. But on the otherhand this also led to more serious complications of life as a whole. works CitedPalahniuk, Chuck. Fight Club. USA WW Norton, 1996.

Nike Sweatshops Inc Essay

Ethics refer to what is defined as right or malign in the morality of human beings and social issues argon matters which could directly or indirectly affect a person or more members of a society. In this case study, Nike has been accused of subjecting employees in their subcontracted factories foreign to work in inhumane conditions for low net profits. The CEO and cofounder of Nike lamented that The Nike product has become synonymous with slave wages, forced-oertime and arbitrary abuse.Initially, the buckram purchased two shoe-manufacturing facilities in the united States but eventually had to shut them down due to tremendous loss in profits. Today, practically all of Nikes factories are subcontracted and located in countries such as Ind unmatchablesia, Vietnam, China and Thailand, where the labour costs are significantly lesser than those in the United States. The founder of Vietnam Labour Watch, doubting Thomas Nguyen, inspected several of Nikes plants in Vietnam in 1998 and reported cases of worker abuse. At one of these factories which he inspected, a supervisor punished 56 women for wearing remote work shoes by forcing them to run around the factory in the how sun. Twelve workers fainted and had to be dispatchn to the hospital. He also reported that workers were allowed only one bathroom break and two drinks of water during each eight-hour shift. The ethical and social issues in this case are that Nike unethically takes advantage of these labour markets because it provides them with a high profit.Nike should also be held creditworthy for what happens in factories they do not own to a certain degree because low-cost manufacturing has al ways been their strategy in the market. Although they do not directly own these factories, they should take the initiative to be socially responsible and monitor the minimum working conditions as it would reflect on the play aprospicients image. A live wage is defined by the wage which allows the earner to afford basic needs such as food, shelter and otherwise necessities of life. The labour cost of manufacturing a shoe is $2. 43 while the consumer pays $65 for it. Nike could still afford to pay its workers a living wage without raising its prices to the consumers. Realistically, the wage guideline of the FLA seems more feasible as it is based on a fixed statistic of minimum wage as required by law or the average industry wage, whichever is higher. That being said, the minimum wages of some developing countries are too low and would not provide the benefits of a normal living for the employees. Therefore, the guidelines of the WRC seem more appropriate to me and it would be considerable to take into account the wages of a normal-income employee and follow that guideline. It is unethical for Nike to pay endorses millions of dollars while its factory employees nail a few dollars a day. Sure, it is important for them to market their products and using celebrities and spokespeople would cost ton s of money but there are many other ways for them to market their products without the need to exploit the conditions of employees in third world countries. All other major athletic shoe manufacturer also contract with overseas manufacturers albeit to various degrees. Athletic shoe bulletproof New proportionateness Inc. is somewhat of an anomaly as it continues to operate five factories in the United States. However, New Balance has developed a different marketing strategy in comparison to Nike. They do not use professional athletes to market their products. Instead, they choose to invest in product research and development. New Balance also makes most of their shoes in the United States, paid workers over 30 times what Nike workers get in Vietnam, yet they still make a profit. To achieve corporate social responsibility, Nike should seriously consider the impact of their companys actions on society. It is an obligation to take actions that protect and modify the welfare of society as a whole, along with their own interests. They should be responsible for the legal, social and philanthropic aspects of its subcontracted factories. They are not paying their employees the legal minimum wage, caring about the working conditions and welfare of these employees and just not taking into consideration the well-being of others.Ten years ago, the company had been subjected to interdict press, lawsuits, and demonstrations on college campuses alleging that the firms overseas contractors subject employees to work in inhumane conditions for low wages. With the introduction of the fair labour association and worker rights consortium, Nike is tardily trying to improve the working conditions on subcontracted factories and hopefully in 10 years, they would be able to re-establish themselves as a morally acceptable company. Nike could fix observed the ethical and social guidelines of how an organisation should be managed. They should not have hired minors under 16 to work. An d instead of purchasing two shoe-manufacturing facilities in the United States, Nike could have just purchased one plant and see how their operations went before thinking about purchasing another plant. When the firm finally saw winner in 1980, eight years after the company was founded, and became the largest athletic shoe company in the world, they could have finally purchased the shoe-manufacturing plants in the United States and it would probably have been a success, without having the need to subcontract factories and cutting the cost of labour just to have a bigger profit. This in turn would not have caused so much negative press that the company has had to deal with so far. For future references, Nike should learn from their past mistakes and treat the subcontracted employees morally, pay them a better wage and improve their working conditions. They should also better manage their subcontracts and not just use them as proxies for Nike to distance themselves from taking any resp onsibility for the way their factory workers are treated. The subcontractors are considered stakeholders in the organisation and Nike, as the manager, should make it their concern as to what is happening in these factories.Bad press will take a long time to subside and what Nike can do from now is to acknowledge its past errors and become more socially responsible for the sake of their future. Colleges and universities have direct ties to the many shoe and apparel companies that contract with overseas manufacturers. Most universities receive money from athletic shoe and apparel corporations in return for outfitting the universitys sports teams with the firms products. What motivates them is the bad image they could be portraying when they wear the firms apparel. They could be seen as promoting the cause for sweatshops. The United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) organisation was formed in 1998 and led by former UNITE summer interns. The USAS staged a large number of campus demonstr ations which protest against the universitys contract with Nike due to the firms alleged sweatshop abuses. More than 100 students demanded that the university not renew its contract with Nike and rallied outside the office of the universitys chancellor. More than 50 other universities staged similar protests and sit-ins.The debate why their activism is not widespread is because it is hard to get a viewpoint from them that does not reflect that of UNITE. It was claimed that Nike owes $2. 2 million in shift pay to workers in Honduras when two Nike factories were closed. When hounded over their exploitation of workers, Nike released a statement that they are deeply concerned, but cannot assume any responsibility for the actions of their subcontractors. In my opinion, Nike should pay the severance owed.Although they do not own the factories, they are still involved with the overall management and well-being of the workers. At the end of the day, the subcontractors are under the employ ment of Nike and should be responsible for the employees. Despite its controversial record on the issue of sweatshops and monitoring labour practices abroad, Nike has been the recipient of a variety of corporate social responsibility recognitions over the past several years. Many of these awards are for issues other than their labour practices abroad. They have been named as one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2010 for Corporate Responsibility snip and one of 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World in 2009. Nike has appeared to be taking actions for mishandling the sweatshop issue as well as they could have and for not adequately monitoring its subcontractors in overseas operations until the media and other organisations revealed the presence of sweatshops. They seem to have realised their mistake of not being socially responsible and are trying to make amends for their wrongdoings.

The Crave for Companionship in of Mice and Men

A guy goes nut if he aint got nobody. None of the characters in Of Mice and Men experience true companionship. Discuss. The desire for companionship is a key theme present through step to the fore John Steinbecks novella, Of Mice and Men. The slap-up depression is no help when trying to find or keep confederateships alive in the rural, country areas of America. George and Lennie depict what true companionship is all about when sticking to bestowher through thick and thin.Being the only ominous man living on the ranch, Crooks finds it hard to relate with others, finding himself separated from the other men. The relationship amid Curley and his wife is merely just an unstable trades union that lacks true meaning and love. Desire in many forms is found throughout the novella but companionship is the main one as e trulyone can be lonely at times. George and Lennies companionship contrasts the loneliness that surrounds them on the ranch. Somehow the two men complement each other des pise the lack of compatibility between them.Lennie would call George a friend, but George would find difficulty to call him one back. aint many guys travel around together ( foreshorten page 36) this is what Slim tells George when he finds out that he and Lennie travel together. The companions are in search of the American dream which is to own their own piece of land, wed accept our own start where we belonged and not sleep in no pass house (George page 63) this would put George in control of finally keeping them out of trouble, especially Lennie.George is make to stay with Lennie because of his own guilt and the fact that he doesnt want to end up like everyone else on the ranch, alone. George knows that life without Lennie would be so much easier on himself and sometimes he wants the independence of not have to keep his eye on a grown man who has the mind of a child. Unfortunately their great friendship had to end with George killing Lennie. Although it may have seemed to be G eorge protecting himself it was largely to protect Lennie as Curley could have killed him in a more vicious manor.Crooks, the negro Stable Buck (page 66) seems to be the major outcast living on the ranch in Of Mice and Men. He lives in his own room, separated from the bunk house in a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn (page 66). Crooks was a proud, and aloof man (page 67), bitter and hostile yet very intelligent and wise mainly because of the isolations he faces and his skin colour. When Crooks is faced with the solid figure of Lennie standing in his door way he attempts to lash out at him yelling you got no ight to come in my room (pages 67-68) displaying a large deficiency of communication and trying to indicate to Lennie to leave him alone. As Lennie is mistaken by the messages Crooks is trying to send him he enters giving off no bad intentions so the black man lets his guard down. As the conversation carries on Crooks finds Lennie just sees him as another man wor king at the ranch. Curleys wifes want for friendship has altered her demeanour towards men on the ranch tremendously, making her overtly insecure and excessively flirtatious. The men on the ranch avoid her because of flirtatious personality to keep out of trouble. No one understands her situation and how loneliness affects her. Her hazard is evident by the way she dresses and utilizes her make-up. She uses her appearance to receive attention like when Curleys Wife was standing there looking in. She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. (Steinbeck 32). Curleys Wife feels she must(prenominal) dress this way for people to acknowledge her and install her attention. Her dressing-up is entirely unnecessary because they live on a farm and this is not the typical clothing. Curley does not give his wife enough companionship, love and affection that she desires. This makes her seek it from other people whining to Lennie in the barn Why cant I talk to you? I never get t o talk to nobody. I get awful lonely (page 85). By not talking to anyone and constantly worrying about what Curley will do, she has attained a shenanigan that does not appeal to anyone on the ranch.Acting in flirtatious ways is the only way Curleys Wife thinks she can deal with her aspirations for a friend. Every human ineluctably a companion, a friend or acquaintance to share his or her thoughts and feelings with, thats what makes us all human. Unfortunately some of us are unable to have this desire that we all dream for, and especially during the depression friends were very scarce. Of Mice and Men shows the ups and downs of friendship, the good times as well as the bad and the limits a friend will go to, to save their friend from anguish.

Pesticide Resistance Essay

Insect attack is a serious agricultural problem leading to revert losses and reduced product quality. Insects can cause damage both in the field and during storage in silos. Each year, plant louses destroy about 25 percent of food crops worldwide. The larvae of Ostrinia nubilalis, the European clavus borer, can destroy up to 20 percent of a maize crop.European corn borerA major pest in southern and central Europe. Insect resistant Bt maize is already being grown in Spain, France, Germany, Portugal and the Czech Republic. Western corn rootworm beetles feeding on a maize cob. Certain cultivars of Bt maize are resistant to this serious pest. GM rootworm resistant crops are not approved for finish in the European Union but are now being grown in the US.The Bt concept pest resistant transgenic plantsBacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, is a bacterium that has attracted much attention for its use in pest control. The soil bacterium set outs a protein that is toxic to various herbivorous i nsects. The protein, known asBt toxin, is produced in an inactive, crystalline form. When consumed by insects, the protein is converted to its active, toxic form (delta endotoxin), which in turn destroys the gut of the insect. Bt preparations are commonly used in organic agriculture to control insects, as Bt toxin occurs of course and is completely safe for humans.More than 100 different variations of Bt toxin have been identified in diverse strains ofBacillus thuringiensis. The different variations have different target insect specificity. For example, the toxins classified under(a) Cry1a group target Lepidoptera (butterflies), while toxins in the Cry3 group are effective against beetles.Researchers have used genetic engineering to take the bacterial genes needed to produce Bt toxins and introduce them into plants. If plants produce Bt toxin on their own, they can defend themselves against specific types of insects. This means farmers no longer have to use chemical insecticides to control certain insect problems. Critics claim that in some cases the use of insect resistant crops can harm beneficial insects and other non-target organisms. Extensive ecological impact assessments have been addressing these issues. In the field, no significant adverse effects on non-target wildlife nor long term effects of higher Bt concentrations in soil have yet been observed.New concepts on the wayBt crops have been planted commercially for more than eight years. Other naturally occuring insecticidal compounds are now becoming available as alternatives to the Bt approach. Among these are chitinase, lectins, alpha-amylase inhibitors, peptidase inhibitors, and cystatin. Plants genetically modified to express these defense proteins are still in early stages of development.

Killer of Sheep

The movie entitled Killer of Sheep by Charles Burnett in 1977 made a significant footprint in the movie world. Though it was a low-budgeted movie, it won the first prize at Berlin Festival in 1981. This movie is all about Stan and his family as they struggle their flavor with financial and emotional problems. Stand fetchs in a slaughterhouse to make his family live. It is a simple yet attackable story because it shows reality in the society. legion(predicate) of us work hard but less opportunities. The only thing that Stan felt happy is when he dances with his wife and hold his daughters hands. There argon only six characters and one significant setting in the story, which means that the movie is an independent film. All the characters are connected with one another as they reveal their characterizations in the beginning of the story and donate their thoughts and perception of society as the movie ends. I can say that it is an advocacy film though it has no solution in the end. As it shows the life of many people like Stan and his family, the director depicts that present situation of the society that needs to be interpreted care of. The movie shows that Stan is already numb with his life as a slaughter because he knows that he could not able to give his family a unwrap life. His wife is also a weak person who used to depend on Stan as the provider of the family, which made the movie more dramatic and realistic. As an audience, it is an eye-opener to the habitual of the situation and life of people during 1970s. It made me realize that people like Stan tried to be contented with their life as they anesthetized themselves from their situation to make their bodies work and think only for the betterment of their family even with no luxury and lesser necessities.Work CitedBurnett, Charles. M Statistics

MAT 300 STATISTICS M&M PROJECT PAPER ALEXANDREA WINT PROFESSOR AZAD, VARGHA June 3, 2012 Purpose of Report The purpose of this project is to find the information for a quality control theatre director of Masterfoods plant. The manager wants to know about the similitude of messdies and if they ar the same or different. If there is any difference that exists then the manager wants to know why there is a difference in such cases. A study was conducted and results were obtained and based on these statistical results we will try to fool information about the quality of Masterfoods plant. differentiate1 Sampling Method Sampling method is used to draw the random examine from the population of candies from different bags is known as the simple random sampling without replacement. 36 bags were drawn from the population of different color of candies and after drawing the 36 takes the numbers of different candies are calculated. For sample in bag one how many are blue candies, how man y are trigger-happy candies, how many are yellow candies etc. There are six different colors in each bag. So the record is do after collecting the sample. Part 2 Method, Analysis, ResultsIn this section we mother made attempts to find the descriptive statistics related to the number of candies or affinity of candies in the bag. The cockeyed number of candies per bag is approximately equaled to 55. This means that we are expecting 55 candies with a standard deviation of 2. 1 in each bag and out of these we also expecting that the proportion of different colors of candies should be equal for each bag. The sample proportion for blue candies is . 1916, for orange candies is 0. 18, for green candies is 0. 1815, for yellow candies is 0. 663, for red candies is 0. 136 and for brown candies is 0. 1446. For this results we have sampled 36 bags which contains 1978 candies overall. Part 3 Method, Analysis, Results For this part the 95% confidence intervals are obtained for each color of c andies and also the mean number of candies. The following results are obtained from the analysis * 95% convinced(p) that the population proportion for blue candies will lies betwixt 0. 1743 and 0. 20895. * 95% confident that the population proportion for orange candies will lies between 0. 1631 and 0. 969 * 95% confident that the population proportion for green candies will lies between 0. 16451 and 0. 19848 * 95% confident that the population proportion for yellow candies will lies between 0. 14992 and 0. 18274 * 95% confident that the population proportion for red candies will lies between 0. 12089, 0. 1511 * 95% confident that the population proportion for brown candies will lies between 0. 12909, 0. 16009. In addition to this we can say that 438 candies should be sampled to obtain a 95% CI of the proportion of blue candies with a 4% margin of error if the known proportion of blue candies is 0. 4. Part 4 Method, Analysis, Results This portion explains the hypothesis testing for population proportion for different types/colors of candies. Each candy was tested against their standard proportion, which was then fixed by the organization and we have obtained the results using the Z test for proportion. We can conclude below results based on the analysis of data * The true proportion of blue candies is non equal to 0. 24 at 5% level of significance. * The true proportion of orange candies is not equal to 0. 0 at 5% level of significance. * The true proportion of green candies is not equal to 0. 16 at 5% level of significance. * The true proportion of yellow candies is not equal to 0. 14 at 5% level of significance. * The true proportion of red candies is equal to 0. 13 at 5% level of significance. * The true proportion of brown candies is equal to 0. 13 at 5% level of significance. * The population mean for each bag is more than 54 candies and standard deviation for number of candies per bag 1. 69oz bag is more than 1. at 5% level of significance Part 5 Metho d, Analysis, Results In this portion a check for whether the there is any significant difference in the population proportion of red and brown candies was done. For this we have tested the hypothesis at 5% level of significance. From the results which we obtained we can conclude that we are fail to reject the null hypothesis H0 because we dont have enough usher to support the claim that the population proportions of red and brown are equal at 5% level of significance. Quality ControlIt is obvious that there are 4 candy proportions that do not meet the extremity of set proportion only red colored and brown colored candies met the specified requirement of proportion. So we want to check why there is a difference in the quality of the output. So some of the reason for this difference can be classified as * The machine(s) is/are not working properly, is there any difference in the output of one machine? * There is a incident that due to different workers at the different shifts the v ariation arises. There is any assignable or random cause occurs or in simple linguistic communication we can say that machines are producing the same colored candies at regular intervals. Conclusion We can conclude from the above results that there quality of output is not at the point where the plant would like it to be, because the standard which are fixed in advance did not work best with the output which we have obtained. The four-population proportion for color blue, orange, green and yellow does not meet the set requirements.

National Identity in Film

The easygoing, by Campion, and Truman Show, by Weir twain interact with concepts of field indistinguishability in separate ways. both(prenominal) of these needs are products of new-sprung(prenominal) Zealand culture, either finished production or in ethnical discourse. Both films have as well been well received and to a dandy extent awarded. The Piano tells the story of adenosine deaminase McGrath. She is a Scotswoman from bare-assed Zealand who is sold into marriage. The film is staged in 1851. She doesnt speak throughout the majority of the film, tho expresses herself through her diffuse playing this is until her husband leaves her piano on a beach. This is symbolic of his lack of love for her and an example of the emptiness in Adas life. The piano is then sold to their neighbor George Baines who convinces Ada to give him piano lessons and eventually sexual favors. As Ada gradually falls in love with Baines through their connection of the piano, she finds meat for he r life. The Truman Show is filmed by Australian instrument Weir and indite by brand-new Zealander Andrew Niccol. The story follows Truman Burbank who is unaware that his entire life, since birth, has been an organized mockery for a television series/project. He is luckily chosen, out of a throng of five mollycoddle orphans, to be the star of the show. The Truman Show represents Trumans life. Viewers are told that Trumans birth was broadcast stand on television, but his child rearing is not presented in the film. The idea behind subject area identity is that hotshot defines their self through the identity of their nation. In their article, National Identity and Self-Esteem, Jeff Spinner-Halev and Elizabeth Theiss-Morse analyze the nature of subject area identity. They adopt the theory that if the self-esteem of an individual is tied to their nation than its the perfect proponent to keep an eye on safe and secure nations. They feel that there is an immediate connection betwee n self respect and group identity so much so, it could lead to one sacrificing their own personal needs for the good of the group. They in addition acknowledge that there is a competitive nature within group self esteem this meaning that most groups necessity their group to do expose than others. This is often seen in the patriotic nature of governmental propaganda, carried out by many countries to convince soldiers to go to war. This system of control is one known for cajoling groups to unbroken a certain program or way of thinking by catering to individuals wants, needs, or fetching advantage of their fears. This complex of discipline identity is a major aspect of a governments societal control, as well as a signifi arseholet ideal satirized in The Truman Show. It is most visibly personified in the caseful of the shows producer Christof. He argues that human creations accept the world in which they are presented, and uses this to justify why Truman hasnt figured out his p redicament up to this point. All of the employees, of the studio, playing as Trumans family, friends and extras living within the town, can all be viewed as nationalists to the studios regime. The National Identity of these films can be directly corresponded to the culture and narration of brand-new Zealand. In 1945, the New Zealand use up Critic Gordon Mirams argued that if there was a New Zealand culture, it was a mostly a Hollywood creation. The precisely thing more(prenominal) popular than going to the movies, in New Zealand, was drinking tea, during that time period. This idea is back up by the statistic that for many eld New Zealanders were the most frequenters of the movie world. In their book New Zealand Film 1912-1996 Helen Martin and Sam Edwards analyze the filmography of many films produced during this century in New Zealand. This book basically analyzes the entire write up of film in New Zealand. The two authors managed to find more than 162 films. In formulating their list and deciding on what they would identify as New Zealand Films, they decided the film had to have a significant connection to the mend in terms of the films creators, cast, copyright holder, financiers, production team, and technical equipment. They also felt that a film that holds a sociological connection to New Zealand should be categorized as a New Zealand films as well. Thus, they included The Piano in their list of films pointing out that though it was not filmed in New Zealand, its story was until now set there. The authors also felt it the film addressed social issues pertaining to the history of New Zealand within the time frame it was set.The Piano, identified as a socially conscious New Zealander film, it is identified as such through its understanding of national identity and the plight of the New Zealand people. This can be seen in the fact that the film is a historically place dawdle, and has much cultural significance. The film is often credited for its s tyle, in that it is deemed as a historical romance and a contemporary romance in a historical setting. In his article, disconnected causes the political theory of national identity in Australian motion picture, John Slavin does an in-depth analysis of the cultural connotations present in cinema when using it to understand a nation. His attitude is that cinema as well as reality have an interweaving family relationship with each other that finally define the national identity of a nation. He further explains this in his closing statements when he says, political orientation transforms individuals into constitutive social subjects by interpelation, the Althusserian term for the seductive mirror images of coherent identity promoted by cultural artifacts such as the popular cinema. But this thesis follows the suggestion that it is the purpose of ideology to represent an complex quantity relationship of the cinematic viewer to his/her real conditions of existence. Those real conditi ons, based on psychic and social faulting are symptomatic of the Marxist definition of alienation In other words, re monstrances of identity, two national and individual, are thrown into critical doubt within the mythic annalss. (Slavin, 2002).Slavins view that though ideology is employ in film, national identity is virtually dependant on film narrative is precise ironic, considering that he uses ideology by connecting his argument to Marxism. In the end, the interpretation of his argument, just like national identity, are both dependant on the prevail and views of their creator, no matter how drenched in history they.Even within this corruption of the accepted nature of things, Slavin acknowledges that the transitional tendency of film images, etiquette and social relations over the years is a perfect source for study of socio-economic change. Once one grasps a clear understanding of cinemas use of ideology to mold national culture, the totally question left is, how is ideo logy used, and national culture shaped, specifically within these two films? In their novel, Piano Lessons Approaches to the Piano by Felicity Coombs and Suzanne Germmell, the authors work to claim a better understanding of The Piano. They point out the films originally human nature in the fact that there is no main villain. The audience is often incited to pity, empathize and despise all ternary main characters.Baines, Stewart, and Ada can all be viewed as human because they all have their flaws. It is unseasonable for Stewart to disregard his wife they way he does, though the nature of his arrange marriage is a far-famed statement pertaining to the era of the films plot. The audience is allowed to relate to this sociological circumstance, while at the like time despise Stewart for his treatment of Ada. Whereas Ada is presented as a victim of the cultural norms of her time period, she still transcends beyond this, to adopt contemporary ideals and relate to the audience. The fact that she cheats on her husband is a motive for dislike, but it is also key to the liberation she achieves from her mundane existence. The fact that she does not embody the role of the victim throughout the entire film is testament to the films reality. Baines also be makes an equally likeable figure in that his sexual advances evolve from something seemingly corrupt to an actual full blown love affair. This triangular relationship between the three main characters says a lot about male and female relations during the time. The authors also correspond to Adas relationship with men to the nature of post-colonialism, which was also a big set about of New Zealand at this time and also a big part of this film. The relationship between the oppressor and the loaded is a key theme in the relationships Ada has with men. The colonial history of 1850s New Zealand is encompassed within the plot. This is an example of how ideology is used in narrative to enhance the value of a message more rele vant. In confronting these ideals of colonization, the film came under much scrutiny. Many felt the film gave a unreasonable presentation of race. During this time there were many Maori, who argued they were the product of White New Zealanders social injustice. They felt the films disregard for their cultural relevance was a form of national mythmaking, in avoiding the argument that whites staked claim on their land. This conflict is overlooked by the plot, but the nature of its severity is still implied through the topic being completely disregarded. It is also a common controversy within the land that many foreign investors come and buy land, from potentially the wrong owners. By disregarding their true history, the national identity presented for New Zealand is that of a small land with a history for sale. The connection with national identity here is cultural. This differs from the connection clear in The Truman Show.Just like The Piano, The Truman Show poses an argument larger than itself in respect to national identity, only this film speaks more metaphorically. The idea previously posed in National Identity and Self Esteem, was that national identity is largely the product of a model that is followed by a group of people. These people are so caught up in the ideals of the group, they rather sacrifice their own individual comforts for the good of the team. The authors bring that these groups are also very competitive with one another, identifying their identity with that of the group and basing the groups identity on their logical argument from other groups. This becomes very relative to some of Rene Girards views. In his seminal theory of mediated liking Rene Girard argues that human desire is imitative. His views is that the goals we hold most personal are actually the desires of others which we want to achieve because others want to achieve them. This is very compatible with the ideals of national culture and the cult group fallowing it incites. Thi s is also seen constantly in The Truman Show, the main motivation for Truman to escape the studio/town is to travel to Fiji after his one true love. If the character personifying his school crush had never desired to move there, Truman would have never desired to follow. This is a direct personification of Girards theory, as well as an example of Morse and Halevs version of national identity. Here it is easy to see the differing way in which The Truman Show represents national identity from how it is used in The Piano. In sum, through an understanding of identity theory and New Zealand culture, we can develop a better understanding of the directors use of national identity in the films The Piano, and The Truman Show. National identity is depicted in The Piano through its cultural connotations, historical representation, and it authenticity to social norms.Despite all of its awards, the films inability to stay true to the ethnic history of the town is proof that it attempts to mold na tional identity through its filmic ideals. The directors pick and chose the ideology they identify with and disregard the other aspect of New Zealand culture. Whereas The Truman Show does not attempt to shape the national culture of New Zealand, it is virtually unidentifiable as a New Zealand film, except for the fact that is written by a New Zealander. What the film contributes to national identity is its use of the theories backing it, and its own profound message on the nature of the conflict. What the film reveals about national identity is its dependency on the narrative of a film. The ironic fact is that it does this through its own abuse of the power. Truman represents everyman against the crowd. The complex world he interacts with is very similar to the real world, only in his world he really is the center of attention. The most advise aspects of an individuals life, like marriage, personal goals and beliefs are all a product of a false reality. This concept is very similar to Freudian theory, Marxist theory, biblical references and even many science fictionalisation narratives. What the films reveals about national identity is its core nature. The entire town operates in one direction and for one purpose. Truman is the only one who is unaware of this purpose, but he still seems to follow along contributing to what he feels is the best interest of the group. His desires are compatible with his nations desires, until he breaks free from this methodology of control. Both of these films interact with national identity theory both are products of New Zealander culture, and both are great films.Work CitedAdorno, Theodor W. and Max Horkheimer. Detoxification and soberness are really critical for the backsliding bar program to work successfully. Having in head that most people who relapse are toxic. even if they are sober. it will still be r eally hard for them to believe clearly retrieve things and pull off their emotions. The symptoms would declinein any instance the individual gets isolated from the society or when he undergoes stress. It is advisable to travel easy and turn on the rudimentss and in this instance. the inquiry here should be What is it that you need to make to avoid imbibing immediately? Measure 2 AppraisalThis measure aims at placing the progressive form of jobs that did ensue into the past backslidings and so happen solutions to the hurting ensuing from such jobs. Through the Reconstruction and presentation of jobs. the now and here issues that stand to do immediate menace to sobriety can be pinpointed and crisis programs developed to conciliate such issues.Measure 3 Backsliding EducationRelapsers have to be familiar with the backsliding surgical operation and the best ways to pull off it. Involving the household and other patrons is a great thought. The instruction should try to stress four chief messages First. backsliding is an ordinary and a natural procedure in the convalescence out of the chemical dependance. One should non be ashamed of it like in the instance of Jed who gets jumpy when he tries to remain off from imbibing. experiencing closed in or like he is suffocating . He besides can non conceive of how to explicate to his brothers why he is non fall ining them in the bars. Second. people are non all of a sudden taken rummy. There are gradual warning mark patterns that indicate they are easy cropping in once more. Such marks can merely be recognized when maven is sober. Third. after they are identified. the retrieving persons can acquire to larn how to pull off such backsliding warning marks when sober. And the last 1 is that hope is existent. Jed oneness time attended a few AA meetings. but did non experience that AA was helpful It was listening to a batch of cats whining . This should and will most likely divergeation if he attends a talk that describes the distinctive warning marks that precede backsliding to chemical usage.Measure 4 Warning Sign IdentificationRelapsers should be able to find the jobs that resulted into backsliding. The chief aim here is to reference personal warning marks that made them travel from a province of stable recovery all the manner back to chemical usage. There is barely of all time merely a individual warning mark. Normally a series of warning marks develop one after the other to make backsliding. The cumulative consequence is what wears them down. The ultimate warning mark is fundamentally last blow. Unfortunately most relapsers think it is the last warning mark that caused it all. For this ground. they tend to presume the early and more delicate warning marks that leads to the concluding catastrophe.Measure 5 Follow-upThe warning marks are unbound to alter with advancement in recovery ( Field. The ability to cover with the warning marks of one phase of recovery does non warranty that one will cognize how to pull off the warning marks of the following phase.
